I think its very interesting how the bottom of this picture fades to black. I think the overall darkness of the black and white picture coupled with Grace's very serious pose gives the picture a spooky horror film feel. If she was wearing a brighter color aff of which the limited light in the room could have reflected, I think this picture would look very different. Again, this photo demonstrates what a huge impact light has in creating a narritative fro the viewer.
I'm sure this photo will be surprising to a lot of people because I look very serious and I rarely am that serious. Most people don't see me like this. I really like this photo a lot! In the color photo, my hair almost has a red tint because of the way we focused the light on it. The sun was bright and harsh that day so I'm assuming that's where the red tint came from. I also think we made a good call in turning my sweatshirt inside out. If there had been words visible, the bottom half of my body wouldn't have been shrouded in darkness and I think the complete darkness on the lower half of my body is what really makes this photo.
This photo feels "soft" but not because it's out of focus. I took me a bit but to figure out but I think this is due to the fact that, due to the short depth of field, Grace's face is in focus but her hair is not. This makes a somewhat out of focus ring around her head. There is very little detail in the background so it's not apparent if it is in focus or not which I think adds to the effect. I really like this because I think it gives the picture a dreamlike quality which is pretty neat. I also think this picture seems pretty serious as a result of it being dark. This is because there is only a very small area of Grace's face that isn't in shadows.
As Zach said, Grace's hair is somewhat out of focus, which gives the picture the effect of somewhat hazy, mysterious, dreamy, etc world. I really love the color version of this photo. I feel that the light reflected from Grace's left eye really gives the photo an eerie and powerful effect (as in Grace is in a position of authority). This is also probably aided by the fading effect in the bottom portion of the photo.
