window portraits, Clare

  1. I think this portrait does a really good job of demonstrating background separation. Even though the back of Clare's hair is getting almost no light, it is still separated from the background (wall) because the wall is getting more light than her hair due to the fact that the blinds in front of another window were opened for this shot. I also really like how her whole face is well lit but there are still some very interesting shadows due to the directional light.

    1. I agree with your comment about being able to see her hair clearly separated from the rest of the photo. I also think it is interesting that the paneling of the wall behind her is very clear and each panel can be seen individually. It again demonstrates how light is either reflected or absorbed by its environment.

  2. I really like this photo, especially in its black and white form. The shadows on her face give a real sense of depth and reality to the photo. Having been a part of the portrait process, I'm sure it took a while to find the exact right positioning of Clare in relation to the sun that would give such defined shadows. The only light that can be seen in the photo is seen streaming out from behind Clare which gives it a really dramatic feel.
